Improve Your Child's Social Skills

Social skills come naturally to many of us. Without being taught, most of us figured out how to interact with others, what appropriate eye contact is, how to know read others’ expressions and body language, etc. For some children however, these skills do not come as easily or naturally – but the good news is: they can be taught! Our social skills classes provide a safe and supportive environment for the development of social understanding and skills in our children and youth.

Bloom Socially!

Our social skills therapy Bloom Socially! are suitable for children and youth experiencing social difficulties, including those with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Our approach draws upon the principles of Social Thinking and focuses on deepening social awareness and understanding. In engaging small group sessions, participants will receive explicit teaching in a focus area each week, using authentic examples, modelling, guided practice, role play and feedback to help generalise their learning to real life situations. Our social skills therapy aim to equip participants with practical “social survival skills” that will help them form meaningful relationships:

1. Understanding social cues (verbal and non-verbal, e.g. eye contact, gestures, expressions)
2. Managing own emotions
3. Perspective taking (understanding others thoughts and feelings)
4. Playing / cooperating well with others (including turn taking, handling winning/losing)
5. Initiating and maintaining friendships
6. Conversation skills
7. Handling bullies

To benefit from Bloom Socially!, your child should have adequate verbal skills and be able to attend in a small group setting. We may begin with 1-to-1 sessions for children who require individual instruction for a start. We conduct screening to ensure that the children are assigned to suitable groups (based on age and social competencies) where they can learn best. Please note that participation is subject to vacancy in the appropriate group for your child. Each session lasts for 50 min and homework will be assigned for parents to facilitate practice in real life settings.
