Cognitive / IQ Testing

We conduct cognitive (IQ) testing for various purposes, including learning and gifted assessments, as well as school applications. Cognitive assessments are often considered high stakes, as they can determine a child’s entry into specific schools or programmes. Because various factors can affect a child’s test performance, we do our best to ensure our test results are accurate representations of your child’s ability by:

  • Obtaining information from you about your child prior to meeting him/her so we are prepared with appropriate strategies to motivate and engage your child
  • Providing a letter for your child with the psychologist’s photo and greeting prior to the session
  • Building rapport with your child to set him/her at ease before testing begins
  • Presenting the tasks as interactive activities/games to minimize test anxiety
  • Providing plenty of encouragement and positive feedback to affirm your child’s efforts
  • Ensuring sufficient breaks are given especially when your child shows signs of fatigue
  • Administering the test over more than one session if necessary

Preparation for Testing

No specific preparation or studying is required. You can help your child be at his/her best simply by:

  • Ensuring sufficient sleep the night before
  • Have a healthy, not-too-heavy meal prior to testing
  • Not putting pressure on your child and simply encouraging your child to do his/her best
  • Packing their water bottle and a light snack

We offer two sessions for testing: 10am to 12pm or 3pm to 5pm. For children who tend to feel tired after school, we recommend testing in the morning.

We utilise a suite of well-established standardised cognitive assessment tools in our practice, including:

  • Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale, Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) for children aged 2 to 7
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V) for children and adolescents aged 6 to 16
  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) for adolescents and adults aged 16 to 90
  • Raven’s Progressive Matrices – Clinical Edition for individuals aged 4 to 69
