Consultation/Therapy

Can I just walk in to your clinic with my child?

We operate strictly on an appointment basis only. Please contact us at 8894 1082 to make an appointment!

Why must I complete the intake form before the first consultation?

The intake form functions as a registration form, and also contains our terms and conditions for parents' acknowledgement. The psychologist reviews the intake form prior to meeting with parents. If your referral concerns are outside of our practice area, we will direct you to the appropriate professional (e.g. forensic psychologists for medico-legal issues).

Can I bring my child to the intake consultation?

The intake consultation is an opportunity for parents to share confidentially about their concerns and ask questions about your child's development. In general, we prefer not to discuss these issues in your child's presence. If you do wish to bring your child to the first consultation, please let us know and we will make the necessary arrangements.

Why are consultation/therapy sessions 50 min long?

Our standard consultation/therapy appointments are usually booked in 1 hr time slots, with the final 10 minutes used for file review and documentation (e.g. case notes). If you would like to arrange for longer sessions, please let us know (fees will be pro-rated).

How do you involve parents in their child's therapy?
We believe parent collaboration is critical to successful therapy outcomes. Thus, we provide regular updates to parents as part of therapy sessions. For example, we may work directly with the child for 45 minutes, and spend 5 minutes updating parents on our observations and what was covered during the session. We can also schedule additional consultation sessions with parents upon request.
Do you provide a report or summary after the consultation or therapy?

No, advice will provided verbally during consultation. Reports are only provided if assessment/testing was conducted. If you do require the psychologist to prepare certain documentation after consultation or therapy, please do let us know (charges apply).

Do you see kids with severe mental health conditions or suicide ideation?

We operate on an appointment-basis during office hours only. We are not equipped to deal with medical emergencies or conditions that require a medical team. If your child is in distress and requires immediate assistance, please proceed to 24hr A&E departments (e.g. Institute of Mental Health (IMH)) or call the following crisis helplines:

Samaritans of Singapore Hotline: 1767
Institute of Mental Health Helpline: 6389 2222

Assessment/Diagnosis

I was referred by my child’s school for the assessment. Does that mean Bloom will share my child’s diagnosis with the school?

No. We protect our client’s confidentiality strictly, as stipulated by ethical guidelines for psychologists. We will only share your child’s information with the school if you give us explicit written permission to do so.

What should I tell my child to prepare him/her for the assessment?
After you have booked the assessment, we will send you a letter to your child explaining what to expect. This is phrased in child-friendly language, e.g. we will do some activities together to discover how you learn, what your strengths are and how we can help you learn/feel better. If your child is prone to anxiety, you may want to avoid using terms like ‘testing’ or ‘assessment’. Our psychologist will also do our best to set your child at ease through rapport building activities!
What is the purpose of diagnosis? Wouldn’t it cause stigma to my child and make the teachers view him/her differently?

Diagnosis helps to inform evidence-based treatment, increase our understanding of the child and enables access to services and access arrangements for exams. We have met many inclusive teachers who use that knowledge in a positive way to understand and support the child. Knowing their condition also enables the child to gain access to relevant information and the community that share the same diagnosis. Lastly, diagnosis also provides professionals with a shared language which facilitates communication and collaboration.

Will you inform my child about his/her diagnosis?
No. We believe the decision of whether or when to tell your child about their diagnosis should be made by parents. As professionals, our job is to advise you on the considerations so you can make an informed decision on whether, when and how to share the diagnosis in an empowering way.
Can you help my child get extra time or exemption from taking mother tongue (e.g. Chinese)?

We do conduct diagnostic assessments that can support your child’s application for extra time or mother tongue exemption. Our experience in this area means that we can advise you about the chances of successful application based on your child’s profile of needs. However, we are not able to guarantee to the outcome of your application, which is the decision of the relevant exam board, e.g. SEAB, IB.

Why do you require the teacher’s contact for the assessment?

As our children and teens spend a significant part of their time in school, understanding their functioning and behaviour in school is often an important aspect of a comprehensive assessment. Thus, we ask parents to provide us with the teacher’s contact, so that we may obtain some feedback from the teacher. If you have concerns about involving your child’s teacher, please raise this with the psychologist so we can discuss alternative options.

How soon can my child be assessed and how long does the process take?

Our wait time varies, but most assessments are scheduled within a month after the initial parent consultation. Assessments can usually be completed within 2-3 appointments.  We schedule a parent feedback meeting 3 weeks after assessment is completed, where the psychologist will go through all the results and recommendations for your child. You will receive a comprehensive written report within 1 week after this parent feedback meeting.

Can you do assessments for overseas clients?
For overseas clients who are able to visit Singapore for the assessment, we are happy to conduct the initial consultation via Zoom prior to your trip. We have served international clients from Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Brunei, Bangladesh, Japan and Nepal. If you are planning to travel to Singapore for assessment, please check with us early on availability during your travel dates to avoid disappointment.
Can you do bilingual assessments?

At present, we have psychologists who speak English, Chinese and Malay. We have experience conducting assessments using the child's mother tongue. This is particularly important when assessing social functioning, where the use of their child's dominant language ensures that we obtain an accurate picture of the child's social competencies.

General

Do you work with any insurer? Can I claim for the cost of assessment or therapy?

We are private pay only, which means we are paid by parents, who may then make claims with insurance companies. We are aware of parents who have successfully made claims to their insurers for our services. Please check directly with your insurer.

Are your psychologists registered with Ministry of Health (MOH)?

At present, psychologists in Singapore are not regulated under MOH. All of our Educational and Clinical psychologists are registered with the Singapore Psychological Society. The public can refer to the Singapore Psychological Society's listing of registered psychologists here https://singaporepsychologicalsociety.org/members-directory/
